Greenlit?
Our project, “Greenlit?”, is a choice-based interactive game that allows creatives to choose among a variety of artistic decisions to tell a unique story. However, players quickly learn that whether they make a risky choice or one that they feel is safer, there are still things executives can disagree with in a project. We did this by creating a list of different choices one might make creatively, then researching stats on different representations and how they’ve performed financially, then designing how the game functions through the app Twine, and finally adding handcrafted graphics. We did this because while we are actively learning how to create art and how to pitch it, we are seeing all the headlines about studios being bought. In this class, we have learned so much about how identity and representation function in storytelling, but we are also hearing about how little Hollywood actually cares about relatable diverse stories. We chose the medium to literally put the player in this situation. It is easy to say filmmakers should include more protagonists with certain traits, but actually creating a film with them can become a huge and pricy risk. With our game’s motif of unfair choices and losing funds, we are displaying a more pessimistic view of what it’s like to be in the room.
